Keith Weitz

Director, Sustainability and Resource Management, RTI International

Keith Weitz has more than 32 years of experience at RTI International where he leads research in sustainable materials management. Mr. Weitz specializes in the development of data and tools, combining life-cycle environmental assessment with economic and social impact assessment to provide a more complete evaluation of sustainability. For the U.S. EPA, Mr. Weitz led work to evaluate plastics pollution and interventions to reduce pollution in communities along the Mississippi River and is conducted analyses of the sustainable end-of-life management of plastics, a plastics recycling infrastructure gap analysis, and evaluated establishment of a plastic recycling industry cluster in the Ohio River valley. For USAID, Mr. Weitz is providing solid waste sector expertise to support activities to reduce oceans plastic pollution in Sri Lanka and Maldives. He provided similar expertise to support work by the World Bank to reduce ocean plastic pollution in Jamaica. For an industry consortium, he supported development of a plastics recycling impact model for an industry consortium to evaluate the potential impact of more than thirty different policies, infrastructure, and voluntary industry interventions on plastic waste reduction and recycling in the U.S. Mr. Weitz holds a Master of Environmental Management from Duke University and a B.A. in Economics and Business Administration from Augustana College.

Joint Sustainability & Product Stewardship & Government Relations Special Session

This session will look at the evolving landscape of sustainable packaging for household and commercial products, focusing on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), post-consumer recycled (PCR) content, and related regulatory drivers to reduce packaging waste and corresponding implementation strategy considerations. The first hour will be a panel discussion of EPR and PCR policy and requirements in the U.S., highlighting special considerations for aerosols, pesticides, and products considered household hazardous waste (HHW). During the second hour, attendees and panelists will split into breakout rooms to discuss specific topics in greater detail.
