The James Machine: 99 Years and Counting

This session will explore the history and enduring significance of the James Machine, which was developed by Sydney V. James at Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. to measure the Static Coefficient of Friction (SCOF) of floor polishes.

Stuart Hughes will highlight the machine’s adoption by key technical organizations, including HCPA and ASTM, and examine the mathematical basis behind its operation. The session will conclude with a discussion of the James Machine’s continued relevance in assessing SCOF for pedestrian walkway safety.

Following this special presentation, the program will continue with the Division’s regular monthly meeting.
